Description
Warm and tender Fried Cornbread Hoecakes that are perfect for breakfast, dinner, or any gathering, bringing the essence of home-cooked comfort to your table.
Ingredients
Scale
- 1 cup cornmeal
- 1 cup buttermilk
- 1 large egg
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon baking powder
- 1/2 teaspoon baking soda
- 1/2 teaspoon salt
- 1/4 cup melted butter or vegetable oil
- Optional: cheese, fresh herbs, jalapeños, honey, or maple syrup
Instructions
- Whisk together the cornmeal, buttermilk, egg, sugar, baking powder, baking soda, and salt until well combined.
- Stir in the melted butter or oil. If desired, mix in cheese, herbs, or jalapeños for an extra burst of flavor.
- Heat a skillet over medium heat and add a small amount of oil to coat the bottom.
- Pour about 1/4 cup of batter onto the skillet for each hoecake, watching for those comforting bubbles to form.
- Cook until the edges start to dry and bubbles appear on the surface, about 3-4 minutes.
- Flip the hoecake and cook for another 2-3 minutes until golden brown and crisp.
- Serve warm, drizzled with honey or maple syrup if desired, for that extra touch of sweetness.
Notes
Leftover hoecakes can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 3 days. Reheat them on the skillet for a fresh-cooked taste.
