Ingredients

Scale
  • 1 cup granulated sugar
  • 1 cup all-purpose flour
  • 1/4 cup unsweetened cocoa powder
  • 2 teaspoons baking powder
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1 cup milk
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter, melted
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract
  • 1 cup brown sugar
  • 1 3/4 cups hot water
  • Optional toppings: whipped cream or vanilla ice cream

Instructions

  1. Preheat your oven to 350°F (175°C) and grease a 9×13 inch baking dish.
  2. Combine granulated sugar, flour, cocoa powder, baking powder, and salt in a large bowl.
  3. Gradually stir in the milk, melted butter, and vanilla extract until smooth and well combined.
  4. Pour the batter into the prepared baking dish, spreading it evenly across the bottom.
  5. Mix together the brown sugar and hot water in a separate bowl.
  6. Carefully pour this mixture over the batter—do not stir!
